Music for the WIN!

“Music is the universal feature of the human experience” – Google search

When I returned to work from child care leave (nearly 1 year off) I had to lead a team of some familiar faces and hire a new employee. I kept thinking about teambuilding activities I could do that were FUN and not the typical tell us about your hobbies, or two truths and a lie. I wanted something that was authentic to me and the people I work with. Then (insert drumroll) I thought about doing a project focused on MUSIC. Everyone I know listens to music; whether it’s for entertainment, exercise, cleaning the house, dealing with a happy or sad occasion, driving, therapy, and so on.

During a team meeting I asked everyone to complete two statements:

  1. Music makes me…
  2. Music is my…

From there the conversation took off and I knew we were on the right track. Each member contributed 10 songs towards a team playlist that I compiled. During a follow-up meeting people organically guessed which team member contributed certain songs, they shared back stories about what a song meant to them and we all learned a new artist or cool song. Over time we added more volumes to our playlist that still lives on YouTube.

I provided that fascinating story to lead up to this part…“The Mommy Scoreboard Music Playlist.” Please share a song that is your favorite motivational, get right, dance-a-thon, winning anthem, two-stepping, finger snapping song. I will compile a playlist and share it out in a post later this month.

Hello and welcome to Mommy Scoreboard. It’s been several years but I remember starting my college application essay with the sentence, “You can always find me with a pen in one hand a basketball in the other.” I enjoy writing but the sport of basketball has been my ultimate joy. Fast forward and now I am the proud parent of three children, a happily married woman and an accomplished recreational basketball player. If I had to update my essay sentence it would read, “You can always find me with a pen, a basketball, a kid or two, a mobile device, a skillet, random toy part, a sippy cup, baby wipes, hand sanitizer and face masks in my hands”…WOW, have times gotten better!
