Women’s History Month: Celebrating My Sports Icons.-Maya Moore

When it comes to basketball accolades and awards, the name Maya Moore is at the top of nearly every list. Maya is a NCAA Champion, EuroLeague Champion, four-time WNBA Champion, six time WNBA All Star, WNBA MVP, Olympic Gold Medalist, just to name a few. Maya’s game, both offensively and defensively is just silky smooth, tenacious and mesmerizing. I was in awe every time I watched Maya play against the New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden. I made sure to be in attendance for those games so I could cheer for the Liberty and Maya.

BREAKING NEWS!!! When Maya announced she was stepping away from the WNBA game in 2019 to focus on her family and social justice reform the news outlets covered all angles of the story just as they did when Maya dominated on the basketball court. One of the greatest basketball players hung up her jersey to pursue another passion, which I find extremely inspiring. In February 2019, Maya wrote in the Player’s Tribune, “There are different ways to measure success. The success that I’ve been a part of in basketball truly blows my mind every time I think about it. But the main way I measure success in life is something I don’t often get to emphasize explicitly through pro ball. I measure success by asking, Am I living out my purpose?”

Maya played the game on her terms and is living by life on her terms…WINNING!

Fun Fact: Maya is a Gemini; therefore, we both play for Team Gemini,

If I could ask Maya a question it would be: Since putting the WNBA on pause what is a new hobby that you’ve picked up?

Hello and welcome to Mommy Scoreboard. It’s been several years but I remember starting my college application essay with the sentence, “You can always find me with a pen in one hand a basketball in the other.” I enjoy writing but the sport of basketball has been my ultimate joy. Fast forward and now I am the proud parent of three children, a happily married woman and an accomplished recreational basketball player. If I had to update my essay sentence it would read, “You can always find me with a pen, a basketball, a kid or two, a mobile device, a skillet, random toy part, a sippy cup, baby wipes, hand sanitizer and face masks in my hands”…WOW, have times gotten better!
